My ammonia is down and my turtles have duckweed to eat now.

I added Zeolite Ammonia Remover to my XP3 filter and now 6 days later my ammonia level has dropped to a good rating. As you can see from the image to the left, the vile on the right is yellow which is today’s reading where as the one on left was from 3 days ago and it is green. Anything that is not yellow means you have large amounts of ammonia in your aquarim which is stressful to your fish. As far as my results are concerned, I am really happy with this product as you can see it has worked really well for me.

I went to my Dads place at lunch today and he gave me a bunch of duckweed. Duckweed is a really small aquatic plant that grows very fast in aquariums. He bought some about a month ago and has since spread in his 10 gallon aquarium really fast. It started to cut the light to the bottom part of his aquarium so he gave me all that he had in that tank. He has spare duckweed in his other tanks so he can grow it really fast and replenish his stock. The reason I wanted duckweed was because is it good plant source for turtles and it’s pretty easy to replenish with it’s fast growth rate. When I got home today I put some in all 3 of my tanks and as soon as I added some to my turtle tank, my female turtle Cocco had a hay day! She loves this stuff as much as lettuce but I can’t say the same about my other turtle Rocco who ate a little bit but then gaveup on it. Rocco is a male turtle and is more of a meat eater where as Cocco my female turtle loves vegetables and could care less about fish in the tank even if they swim right infront of her mouth.

Here is a picture I took of my crayfish SuperTank when he was sitting on top of a floating plant in my 45 gallon aquarium. The reflection looked really cool so I decided to take a picture.

He seems to be doing very well after his last molting session and has eaten a few of my fish which is expected of such a smart crayfish. At times I catch him trying to crawl up the eater tube or climbing the ornaments in the aquarium then positioning his back toward the top and suddenly jolting up to the top of the aquarium. He has quite the personality and always fun to watch.

Yesterday after work I went to Big Al’s aquarium store with my brother Paul and my dad and picked up 6 new platy fish for my aquariums. I bought 3 Tri-Color Platy and 3 Golden Mickey Mouse Platy. I put the Golden Mickey Mouse Platy in my 45 gallon tank and the Tri-Color Platy into my 29 gallon tank.

I changed water in both my 29 and 45 gallon aquarium today to keep up the regular maintenance and to keep the ammonia low in the 45 gallon. It’s been an issue for a while but since my PH is low the ammonia that is in the tank is not lethal to my fish, but either way I’m still working to keep it down.
I bought an insert for my XP3 filter called Zeolite which is suppose to bring your ammonia down and is rechargeable by simply washing it out every 5 days with water.

My brother Paul stopped by the other day and picked up my three pictus catfish and my small pleco that was in my old 20 gallon tank. Knowing other fish keepers is a good thing as you can trade and share fish, this gives you new fish to admire and also more room in your tanks for new fish you might be considering to buy. This past weekend was a sad one as my sister’s dog Mortimer Munch Klein died on Sunday morning at 1:31am at the Vet. He was a sharpei and was born on August 1st 2005. He was having seizures for the past few years and my sister and her husband did what they could to find out why, but unfortunately the vets failed them. Mortimer is leaving his adopted sister Peeka who is also a sharpei and I know she will miss him dearly. I have chosen to write this post to make sure Mortimers’ memory continues on and will never be forgotten just as the former family dog Ceazer. Agata do not worry as I am sure that Ceazer and Mortimer will find each other in doggy heaven, and will keep each other company.
Rest in Peace Mortimer Munch Klein

I’ve done some maintenance on my fish tanks and filters the last few weeks so everything seems to be going good. The only filter that still needs cleaning is the auxiliary filter in my turtle tank. The main purpose of this filter is to remove any large particles of dirt and poop from the turtles. The pickup of this filter is right at the bottom of the aquarium where all the large particles reside, where as my regular filter pickup is about half in the aquarium.
My large yellow belly turtle Cocco has been growing really fast and I haven’t been adding the turtle calcium block fast enough so she split her sell at the bottom a few weeks ago. Soon as I found out I changed the water to make sure it was clean for her to heal and added more of the turtle blocks in the water so she could use the calcium heal that up. She was doing good for a while when i noticed the other day that the large pleco i have in the same tank was trying to suck at the soar spot she had, soon as i saw that i transferred the pleco into my 45 gallon aquarium and now she should be able to heal up in a week or so.
My brother Paul started with the 20 gallon that I gave him but just a few days ago picked up a 55 gallon aquarium and stand and set it all up. He still needs to cycle his water but he should have some fish in it soon. You can check out his new 55 gallon aquarium here www.aquariumfishworld.com
I was also at King Ed’s with him on the weekend and picked up 12 small guppies which have now been cut down to about 7 as a couple died, and the smallest ones got eaten by other fish in my 29 gallon tank. The other fish type that I was looking for for a while now was the Lyre Tail Platy, so I bought 5 of them too. I had two of these before but gave them to my dad and one of them is still alive and looks really cool.

I cleaned my 29 Gallon and my 45 Gallon XP3 filters today. This included washing out the canister, the foam inserts at the bottom, the BioMax Stars and replacing the charcoal pouch and the polishing pad. These filters are really good and I usually only do this once a month but I think that my 29 gallon tank might of been used a bit longer then that. I also rearranged my room with my fish tanks and didn’t have room for my 20 Gallon tank anymore so I gave some fish to my friend Tracey and moved the rest including the angel fish babies to the 29 gallon tank. My Ammonia was still high in my 45 gallon tank tonight so I changed some more water and will keep monitoring this issue.
The 20 gallon fish tank setup is now my brother Paul’s as he has just started a new blog about fish tanks so this was a good gift for him. His blog is www.aquariumfishworld.com. Paul, my dad and myself went to Big Al’s today to look at the fish they had in store and after seeing a bunch of really neat looking fish I might look into getting some more in a bit.
